NICTA tackles looming gridlock

With the population in our capital cities projected to double by 2050, Australia is facing a looming road infrastructure crisis, ­according to one prominent local technologist.

Dean Economou, technology strategist at Australia’s premier IT research centre NICTA, said the current road infrastructure in Australian cities was clearly ill-equipped to deal with rising traffic pressures. He pointed to Sydney, where gridlock and congestion were stifling the city and affecting productivity, as a prime example of where technology, innovation and smarter planning could combine to make a significant impact.
