To develop a world-class reputation in “Crisis Information Management Systems” (CIMS) research and technologies.
SAFE Information investigates the management of flexible information architectures, models, and structures with emergency and crisis systems. Information management includes modeling, representation, and integrating information and situations from multiple sources into a cohesive framework to support incident-level decision making.
The ultimate goal of this research is to investigate the information requirements for CIMS systems who dynamics are difficult to capture and reflect this in new technologies to meet the need of “delivering the right information to the right people at the right place in the right format at the right time”.
The current SAFE Information research is focussed on the distribution of well-structured information composed by humans (eg cyclone warnings, resource messages, etc.) for cross-organisational collaboration. The main outcome of this work has been an improvement in the structure of incident information and sharing of messages across the groups and teams during a crisis, in particular by emergency operations centres. The CAIRNS Demonstrator is an example of this work which highlights the advantages of flexible routing of messages and management of resources during major incidents.
The following sections of demonstrator, standards, people and publications give more insights into the works of SAFE Information.
