Wireless Test-Bed Design: Project Completed

The requirement for a (wireless) communications and signal processing test-bed was brought forward to demonstrate our novel designs in communication systems transceiver design using signal processing techniques.

Digital Signal Processor (DSP) based software implementation of Communications and Signal Processing systems is in very common practice due to its flexibility in design, implementation and performance analysis. Researchers, Engineers and students implement their own prototype systems and even the final products on DSP using software. Communications and Signal Processing algorithms are conveniently implemented using software on this test-bed to verify its performances in the real world. A common practice in wireless communications, for testing communications transceiver design, is to implement the base-band system on DSP or FPGA and attach it to the RF-module for wireless transmission. This is considered to be the next step for the researchers in wireless signal processing, after simulating their designs using Matlab and other simulation tools, to verify their claimed results and performance improvements. Such work in implementing designs and bringing Communications and Signal Processing techniques from theory to practice enables us (NICTA) to compete with the other leading research institutions and organisations around the world and perform at the highest level in this field and making a trademark. This is also necessary to commercialise our research outcomes and to attract the attention of the industry by demonstrating our capabilities in the field.
