Victoria Research Laboratory
Professor Justin Zobel is a Principal Researcher at NICTA's Victoria Research Laboratory, where he leads research in computing for life sciences and is VRL manager of the Making Sense of Data theme. He participates in the BioTala project on text and language processing for biomedical applications, in the Cancer Genomics project, and in a range of related initiatives such as high-performance sequence processing.
Prior to joining NICTA, Professor Zobel led the Search Engine group and managed the Data Engineering discipline in the School of Computer Science and Information Technology at RMIT, where he has held an academic position since 1990. Prior to joining RMIT he was a lecturer in Computer Science at the University of Melbourne. His research interests at RMIT included search engines, bioinformatics, fundamental algorithms, and research methods. He is the author of the text `Writing for Computer Science', now in its second edition.
He holds BSc(Hons) (1985) and PhD (1991) in Computer Science from the University of Melbourne. He is an editor-in-chief of the Information Retrieval journal and is currently President of the CORE association of Australasian Computer Science departments.
