Vladimir Tosic - Publication Highlights

This Web page highlights some publications that I (Vladimir Tosic) would like to bring to the attention of the visitors of this Web site. There can be various reasons why a particular publication is included on this Web page: novelty of the ideas, quality of the research, comprehensiveness of the paper (e.g., compared to some earlier publications on the same topic), or even controversy of the ideas. While many of my publications are widely referenced (in late 2011 my h-index was 17 and my g-index was 31), I feel that some good publications have missed the public attention they deserve. The fact that many of my publications are not listed here does not mean that they are not important or that they are of lower quality - I believe that they are also very good and important. However, it would not be a proper "highlights" Web page if I included too many publications. The publications listed on this Web page are organized by the topic they discuss.

Note that the PDF file Vladimir Tosic - Full Curriculum Vitae lists almost all recent and most of the old publications (co-)authored by me. Additionally, publications in English that were peer-reviewed or have particular importance are listed on Web pages Vladimir Tosic - Selected Peer-Reviewed Papers, Vladimir Tosic - Invited Papers and Keynotes, Vladimir Tosic - Tutorials, Vladimir Tosic - Edited Volumes, Vladimir Tosic - Additional Publications. Reprints of all publications are available upon request by e-mail with "Request for Your Research Publications" in the Subject line.

For up-to-date information about my recent publications, please search the NICTA Publications Database using my family name as the search term.

SOME DEBATABLE (CONTROVERSIAL) OPINIONS

I believe that scientific progress requires critical re-examination and discussion of the achieved results and ideas, as well as assumptions that various authors have adopted. Based on my 25-years of experience in software engineering (I started as a "hacker" in primary school by learning assembly language for a now obsolete computer system), I no longer believe in computing "hypes" (I experienced many of them, sometimes ending in a significant disappointment). I do not believe in "silver bullets" and I try to apply critical evaluation (looking at both strengths and weaknesses) both to my work and the work of the other authors. From time to time, this leads to opinions that are different from the opinions of many members of the scientific community. I think that this is OK. I have heard and read the arguments of the authors who disagree with me, but they have not convinced me. While some people in the scientific community agree with my arguments, not everyone does. I understand that it is impossible to get everyone to agree with me. I even think that this would be undesirable. However, it is desirable that there is a healthy and respectful debate instead of the "group think". Therefore, I will try to sharpen my arguments in the future. My papers/presentations in the following list have not yet been published after formal anonymous peer review, although I would like them to be brought to the attention of the broader scientific community (thus, I post them here). If you have (supporting and/or opposing) comments related to these opinions, please e-mail me with the name of the topic (e.g., "Re: Service Science Is NOT Needed") in the Subject line.
