Carl Middlehurst is the General Counsel and Company Secretary for National ICT Australia. He was formerly Sun Microsystem’s local general counsel for Australasia, Asia South and also the lawyer responsible for Sun Microsystem’s distribution model in APAC.
Prior to that, Mr Middlehurst lived in northern California (Palo Alto) and worked for Sun Microsystems in the US for almost 10 years in both legal and business roles. At one stage, he was the manager of Sun Microsystem’s international investment program targeting high-growth emerging markets.
Prior to Sun Microsystems, Mr Middlehurst was the general counsel and patent manager for a startup pharmaceutical company in northern California, a licensing counsel for The Salk Institute in La Jolla, and a solicitor at Baker & McKenzie (in Sydney and San Diego).
Mr Middlehurst has spoken at numerous conferences on the Internet, ecommerce and privacy law (particularly the international aspects of law on the internet), and the use of Intranets in legal departments.
Mr Middlehurst was an Adjunct Professor at Santa Clara University Law School where he taught Internet and Privacy law. Prior to becoming a lawyer Carl was a research biochemist and has had papers published in a number academic journals.
