Professor Terry Caelli completed his undergraduate and PhD studies at the University of Newcastle between 1968 and 1974 in Mathematics and Mathematical Psychology with specific interests in human and machine vision systems.
From 1974 to 1982 he was a Lecturer and Senior Lecturer at the University of Melbourne and University of Newcastle. During this time he spent one year leave of absence at Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, New Jersey.
From 1982 to 1989 he was Killam Professor of Science at the University of Alberta, Canada.
Professor Caelli was a Professor at the University of Melbourne and Curtin University from 1989 to 1999 while also taking leave of absence to run the NASA Centre for Mapping at the Ohio State University. Returning to the University of Alberta in 1999, Professor Caelli was involved in the management of the Alberta ICT initiative, ICORE.
Professor Caelli joined NICTA in July 2004.
His interests lie in computer vision, machine learning and artificial intelligence and their applications to environmental sensing and decision support systems.
He is a Fellow of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR) and a Fellow of the IEEE. He has also received the Convocation Medal for Professional Excellence from the University of Newcastle.
Professor Caelli serves on a number of international journal boards and conference committees and has extensive research ties with Canada, Italy and Germany, including being a DFG guest Professor at the University of Munich. He has an active interest in the use of ICT for environmental monitoring and management working with university and government partners.
