Overview

Paul has more than 25 years experience in computer science and software development, with experience in diverse areas such as Enterprise architectures and technologies, middleware, Object Orientation and Java, Web and Service Orientation, distributed systems development, knowledge based systems, and software process improvement.

Paul is currently with the NICTA e-Government project. He previously worked for CSIRO (1996-2006): in the ICT Centre (2005-2006), the Software Architectures and Component Technologies project (1999-2003), and the Software Engineering Initiative (1996-1998).

In 2004 Paul was a visiting research fellow at University College London (UCL), managing an EPSRC OGSA (Grid) evaluation project

Key Skills

  • Distributed, Enterprise, Internet, Web and Grid and Service Oriented Architectures
  • Middleware and Application Servers
  • Software Performance and Scalability
  • Quantitative and Qualitative evaluation of software
  • Software Development Processes, Methods and Tools

Research Areas

  • Grid and Web Service Architectures
  • Architectural analysis methods
  • Non-functional architectural qualities (E.g. Performance, Dependability, Agility, Usability)
  • Architectural design methods, styles, tactics, and design patterns
  • Measurement and modeling of non-functional characteristics of Enterprise Systems
  • Enterprise Integration technologies including XML, JCA, ebXML, Web Services, and Service Oriented Architectures
  • J2EE, application servers, and JVMs
  • Automated testing and evaluation of middleware systems
  • Object-oriented methods and tools
  • Software Process Improvement

Paul’s architectural and middleware knowledge enable him to elicit non-functional requirements for enterprise systems, develop and analyse proposed architectural solutions and technologies, evaluate and select technologies and products, and manage and take a lead technical role in the development, testing, deployment and evolution of complex enterprise applications. Supporting skills includes the negotiation, planning and evaluation of contracts and tenders; and the ability to engage with managers, developers, users, stakeholders, vendors, government agencies, standards bodies, and the wider academic and research communities.
