Welcome Message from the Convenor of the Big Picture Seminar Series - QRL Seminars On behalf of National ICT Australia, I am pleased to announce that the Big Picture Seminar Series has been successfully launched at our Queensland Research Laboratory. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to our seminar website. Our first seminar, held by Everyware author Mr Adam Greenfield on 14 July 2009, was entitled ‘The City is Here for you to Use’. Mr Greenfield spoke about how over the past few years, the ‘computer’ has begun to disappear into the fabric of everyday life. He wrapped his head around the question how the advent of a truly ubiquitous computing will change our urban places – both the way they are built, and the way we live them. Our second seminar entitled ‘Government 2.0 – Engaging and Empowering Citizens’ was given by Senator Kate Lundy on 30 October 2009. The talk addressed the emergence of government attempts to improve how they interact with, serve and empower their citizens to innovate for themselves. Senator Lundy discussed how she is experimenting with Web 2.0 technologies and methodologies and the lessons therein, specifically within the scope of her world-leading Public Spheres initiative.
On behalf of the NICTA QRL Seminar Committee, I am pleased to announce the 2010 seminar program to you. We plan to have two seminar events this year. The first seminar, scheduled on 1st of June 2010, will be presented by Mr Malcolm Crompton on the topic ‘Privacy by Design: An Oxymoron, an Impossibility or the Way to Go?’ Mr Crompton is the Managing Director at Information Integrity Solutions Pty Ltd. He is also the President of the International Association of Privacy Professionals, Australia and New Zealand (iappANZ). He was Australia’s Privacy Commissioner from 1999 to 2004. The second seminar will be presented by Dr Chris Nicol on 27 October 2010. Dr Nicol has extensive experience in designing 3G mobile wireless integrated circuits. Prior to joining NICTA as Chief Technology Officer in 2006, he has held positions at Agere Systems and AT&T.
Both seminar events will take place in the UQ Customs House, one of Brisbane’s heritage icons located on Queen Street.
