NICTA Appoints New COO and CTO

National ICT Australia (NICTA) has appointed a new Chief Operating Officer and filled the newly created position of Chief Technology Officer for Embedded Systems.

As of 22 January 2007, Canon Information Systems Research Australia (CISRA) director Dr Phil Robertson will take up the role of COO.

Dr Robertson has over 25 years experience in technology research, development and commercialisation in both the public and private sectors. CISRA is Canon’s Australian R&D subsidiary. It is the company’s most successful R&D lab outside of Japan.

Dr Robertson is a member of Senator Coonan’s ICT Advisory Board and CSIRO’s ICT Sector Advisory Council. He has published journal articles widely on the topic of imaging and visualisation and served on the editorial boards of several international journals and conferences.

Former Agere Systems Australia managing director Dr Chris Nicol will start with NICTA on December 12 in the newly created role of CTO (Embedded Systems). Dr Nicol will drive activities in embedded technology at NICTA, Australia’s Centre of Excellence for information and communications technology.

Dr Nicol first joined AT&T Bell Labs in 1995. In 1998 he returned to Australia to create the first Lucent Technologies’ Bell Labs Research facility in Asia Pacific.

In 2000 he launched Bell Labs Australia’s Wireless Product IC Design team and held the position of Head of Bell Labs Australia for the next three years. In 2003 Dr Nicol transferred the Bell Labs Australia organisation to Agere Systems. He then became the founder and managing director of Agere Systems Australia.
