The National Map project was successful in winning the “Service: Government” Category in the 2015 NSW IAwards.
The National Map (http://nationalmap.gov.au) is software developed by NICTA and hosted by Geoscience Australia for the Commonwealth Department of Communications. The National Map provides web-based access to Australian spatial data.
The National Map initiative has been undertaken to improve the accessibility of Australian Government spatial data and usability testing with users has shown that it does so very effectively.
The National Map software is receiving interest world-wide as a very effective approach to having an open framework for spatial data, keeping all data under the control of the data custodian (rather than centralising the data as is done in most mapping systems such as Google Maps). Keeping the data under the control of the data custodian ensures that the data will be up-to date and provided at the appropriate quality level.
