New Director for NICTA’s Queensland Research Laboratory

NICTA, Australia’s Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Research Centre of Excellence, welcomes Professor Terry Caelli as Director of its Queensland Research Laboratory (QRL).

“I am thrilled to accept this position,” said Professor Caelli. “Heading NICTA’s Queensland Laboratory presents me with a unique opportunity to pursue research interests which are of both personal and national significance,” he added. “Safety and security, cognitive engineering and intelligent systems are all fields in which NICTA’s Queensland Laboratory has significant expertise.”

Professor Caelli replaces founding Queensland Research Laboratory Director Dr Chris Scott, who has taken up a new position at NICTA’s Australian Technology Park (ATP) Research Laboratory in Sydney as General Manager, Safety and Security.

“It is wonderful to have Professor Caelli once again in charge of a NICTA Research Laboratory,” said NICTA’s CEO Dr David Skellern. “I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome him to the role and also to thank Dr Scott for the major contribution he has made in his four years as Queensland Lab Director.”

Professor Caelli joined NICTA in 2004 and was Director of NICTA’s Canberra Research Laboratory in 2005 and 2006. Most recently, he worked as a Distinguished Researcher for NICTA. Professor Caelli is a Fellow of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR), Fellow of the Institute for Electronic and Electrical Engineers (IEEE) and Convocation Medalist from the University of Newcastle. Since the early 1970s, his interests have been in both human and machine vision and the application of research in these areas to health and environmental problems.
