MERIT Summer Research Experience 2008/2009

The Melbourne School of Engineering and the NICTA Victoria Research Laboratory will host the MERIT Summer Research Experience over the 2008/2009 summer.

A number of studentships will be offered to outstanding undergraduate students from around Australia and New Zealand. The studentships are for a duration of 8 - 10 weeks, usually over the 3 month period December to February, and successful applicants are required to be available full time during this period. A tax free scholarship of $400 per week will be available.

These studentships provide an opportunity to do research in the area of information and communication technology, working with teams of worldclass researchers in NICTA. In particular it is also an opportunity to gain an understanding of what it would be like to do a PhD.

Applicants must be currently enrolled in an engineering degree at an Australian or New Zealand University and have completed at least two years of undergraduate study by the end of 2008, and have at least one year of study remaining. An excellent academic record is also required.

Students interested in applying must choose from the list of projects being offered by supervisors at the NICTA Laboratory and complete the appropriate application documentation. A list of projects will be available on-line from July 2008.

Students awarded a studentship will also be required to attend the NICTA Summer Scholars Showcase, which is held at the beginning of the research period, usually in early December. This is an exclusive 2 day event designed to demonstrate NICTA’s work in ICT and connect the students with other NICTA PhD students, researchers and ICT leaders to learn about their experiences. Previous Showcases have been held in Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra. The location of the 2008 Showcase will be advised.
