Summer Scholarship Program

The NICTA summer research internships are designed to provide promising students with the opportunity to undertake work experience in a research environment. It is particularly useful for students interested in undertaking postgraduate research towards a higher degree. It also provides the students with the experience of working alongside researchers at NICTA’s Queensland Research Laboratory.

The Queensland Summer Research Internships program is supported by NICTA's Queensland University partners - Griffith University, Queensland University of Technology and The University of Queensland.

Tenure

The NICTA Summer Research Internships are offered for a 10-week period over the summer semester. The scholarship period usually begins in early December and concludes in February of the following year. The internship period is broken down into two parts to allow for the Christmas/New Year break. The weekly allowance is not paid during this break period.

Benefits

The internship provides the following:

  • Opportunity to discover what research is about - culturally, intellectually and practically
  • Training in research methods guided by a leading NICTA researcher under typical workplace (vis-à-vis academic) assessments
  • Creation of an ongoing relationship with the NICTA research team, both in Queensland and interstate
  • Experience of the independence accorded to researchers undertaking use-inspired research
  • Possibility of academic foundations for a final-year NICTA-aligned project
  • Scope to discuss plans beyond graduation, including options for research degree candidature
  • Scholarship projects may also qualify for workplace experience for university recognition. (This would need to be confirmed in individual cases).

The internship provides for a weekly allowance of $AUD500. Internship holders are expected to participate in the NICTA Summer Scholars Showcase. The 2011 Showcase will be held in Sydney in early December, dates to be confirmed. Travel, accommodation and the cost of all meals are covered by NICTA.
