NICTA's (National ICT Australia) Queensland Research Laboratory is collaborating with its partner universities in Queensland — The University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology, and Griffith University — to develop and deliver enhanced research training to PhD candidates in ICT research fields.
Research in the Queensland Lab is focused on delivering ICT solutions around Safeguarding Australia. The major research activities of the Lab are coordinated through its Safeguarding Australia research program.

NICTA provides a range of scholarships to support postgraduate research within its partner universities:
· The University of Queensland’s School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering
· Queensland University of Technology’s Faculty of Information Technology
· Griffith University’s Institute for Integrated and Intelligent Systems or School of Information and Communications Technology
NICTA scholarships may supplement Australian Government or University Scholarships, alternatively they may be awarded as independent NICTA sponsored scholarships.
All scholarships are based on the acceptance by the recipient of the conditions of the award established by the relevant university in which the student is applying for postgraduate admission.
Eligibility
NICTA scholarships are available to local and international students who are:
· Eligible for admission as research candidates at The University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology or Griffith University,
· Supervised by a NICTA affiliated researcher approved by the relevant university as a student supervisor, and
· Undertaking or proposing a research project which is aligned with one of NICTA’s Queensland research programs or projects, as approved by the Queensland Lab Director.
Awards
The level of scholarship is influenced by the relevant university’s advice on the applicant’s likelihood of gaining an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA), an equivalent institutional award, or an Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (EIPRS). Applicants may already hold one of these Australian Government awards or similar awards funded by another government or institution.
NICTA Research Project Award (NRPA) may be offered as a supplement to local and international students in receipt of a primary government, university or NICTA-funded scholarship. The NRPA provides recipients with an annual stipend of up to $AUD6,000 per annum, and is available for the same period of tenure as the primary award.
NICTA Local Postgraduate Award (NLPA) is available to local students for a period of up to three years (PhD students only), and provides recipients with an annual stipend at the APA equivalent rate.
NICTA International Postgraduate Award (NIPA) is available to international students for up to three years (PhD students only). The NIPA is co-funded by NICTA with its partner universities in Queensland. Stipends are paid at APA rates and the scholarship may also provide international tuition fees.
Applicants for a NLPA or NIPA are automatically considered for a NRPA. The awarding of a NRPA is conditional on the execution of a NICTA student scholarship agreement by the student, which deals with intellectual property and confidentiality issues.
Closing Dates
The closing dates for receipt of applications by each of the Queensland partner universities are published each year. Typically, they are as follows:
For scholarships commencing in session 1 of any year — 31 October of the preceding year.
For scholarships commencing in session 2 of any year — 30 April in the same year.
