About Systems Engineering

This 3-day course in Systems Engineering provides details on “how” to implement the recommended Systems Engineering activities in a typical complex Information and Communications Technology (ICT) project. The course suits commercial organizations operating in medium to high technology fields such as Intelligent Transport Systems, Information Technology, Communications, Defence and Aerospace. The objective is to develop project teams that can direct and control multi-disciplinary and software intensive ICT projects in a repeatable fashion, thereby mitigating the project risks. The course derives its practices and recommendation from Bodies of Knowledge such as ISO9001:2000, ISO/IEC-15288, EIA/ANSI-632, CMMI Version 1.2, and IEEE-1220/12207.

This course is aimed at practicing Systems Engineers operating in ICT projects who have a need to develop and verify system architectures and finally integrate and validate the deliverable system. This is a technical program that includes workshops in which a typical and realistic project will evolve from business needs and concepts to an operational physical system. The course is made up of theory sessions in the mornings and practical workshops in the afternoons. As this course is designed for more experienced Systems Engineers, it is not a pre-requisite to have attended the 1-day Systems Engineering Introduction course (ECS/SE2007-101), however, there is an assumption that the delegates will be familiar with the basic Systems Engineering concepts.

Course Topics

  • Requirements Development: Requirements Development starts with the definition of Operational Concepts for a system from business/mission needs. This is followed by the evolution of the needs into a feasible concept for the system, and later into a set of well defined structured requirements to formally baseline the need. The theory session addresses Needs Analyses, Use-Cases, State and Modes, Operational Scenarios, the purpose of Traceability and Testability, and the recursive nature of the application of Systems Engineering.
  • Architecture Design: Architecture Design follows with the evolution of the requirements to a point where a Functional Architecture can be proposed to define the solution. The theory session addresses Functional Analysis, Optimisation and Trade Studies, Internal and External Interfaces definition, Scenarios evolution, Solution Verification against the originating needs. The practical workshop uses the products of the Requirements Development workshop to evolve the ICT project.
  • Integration and Verification: The theory part of Integration and Verification addresses the techniques of Integration & Validation planning, starting as early as the concept phase. Integration of system components, subsystem interfaces and integration environments are analysed, together with Verification & Validation techniques such as simulation, scenario based and final acceptance of the system in the operational environment. During the workshop the delegates develop a plan for the Integration & Verification of the system developed during the two previous workshops.
