Licensing
Licensing

Licensing is an important path to commercialisation for NICTA technology.

NICTA has developed a licensing model, which guides our activities and maximises the benefits derived from the risk/reward trade-off. The model addresses issues such as what type of licence is appropriate, IP issues, documentation requirements, establishing freedom to operate, developing a business case for possible licensing, regulatory issues and ongoing licence management.

NICTA research teams may choose to commercialise their technology by licensing rather than creating a spin-out company. The reasons for this may include:

  • The technology is not yet ready for spin out, but a commercial opportunity already exists
  • The technology is better viewed as a feature and not a stand-alone product
  • Project team members want to remain researchers in NICTA
  • Team members believe they will receive a better return if they license the technology to an existing industry player rather than try to commercialise it themselves.

Refer to the case study on licensing which describe how NICTA has provided support on their path to market.
