Dr Cox, a researcher in the Empirical Software Engineering Program, which is concerned with the development and codification of empirical research methods for software engineering, has been working at NICTA since early 2003.

Asked what advice he would give to people thinking of applying for positions with NICTA, Dr Cox commented:
“Be prepared to work hard to achieve your goals. Have a detailed research agenda ready to present to your potential program leader. Be aware of what other researchers in your field have done and are doing now.
"When at NICTA, don't be afraid to ask questions, to make presentations, and to get involved in your research program.
